Biodegradation and Bioremediation
Biodegradation is the natural process whereby microorganism alter and break down organic molecules. Natural communities of microbes are amazingly versatile. They can carry out biodegradation in almost every type of environment and habitat, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
Microbes produce and emit enzymes that are catalysts that either begin or speed up chemical reactions. These enzymes break apart the bonds that hold together various contaminants. When a potential food source (the contaminant) is introduced to a microbial environment, the organisms adapt their enzymes to optimize the breakdown of that particular food source. Often many cycles of regeneration are required for microbes to adapt to the contaminant, and in the process, life-sustaining nutrients are depleted. The entire conversation process can be slowed or stopped altogether.
BioNutraTech’s nutriation technology can substantially accelerate biodegradation by providing the necessary support and stimulation for native microbes to quickly multiply and produce enzymes to speed up the metabolic process of biodegradation. BioNutraTech’s formulations are also unique in that the nutrients, VB591™ are introduced in forms that are attracted to the oil globules. This attraction overthrows molecular dissimilarity and mutual bonding forces between like molecules that causes oil and water to be immiscible. In conjunction with the nutrients, VB591™ the process has demonstrated the ability to reduce the time required to effectively remove oil from rocks, sand, and vegetation. Nutrition Technology Description
BioNutraTech’s products provide key life-source nutrients for the beneficial microbial family. It is in a form that accelerates reproduction and activity through both an enriched nutrient and the oleophilic coating that surrounds it.
VB591™ bionutrients; carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals help microbes speed non-toxic mineralization. These nutrients provide vital nutrients for the growth and health of native microbes present at the contamination site with no threat to the extant ecological balance. As a result, contaminants are broken down to carbon dioxide, water and traces of fatty acids.
VB591™ patented formulations utilize a dry, prilled, oleophilic (oil loving) coating. This coating physically sticks to hydrocarbons, fats, oils and greases and because of this, has an advantage over other nutriation methods. This coating clings to contaminants without harmful residual, assuring that bionutrients are always available in useful concentrations for microbes. As a result, proper nutrients are made available on a time-release basis.
VB591™ contains no toxic chemicals, surfactants or hazardous substances. Product shows no indication of significant adverse impacts or algae bloom formation and overcome primary limitation of natural biodegradation. VB591™ remains stable, since it is not affected by the pH, salinity, normal temperature fluctuations or alkalinity.
Environmental Protection Agency
VB591™ has been tested for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is registered on the National Contingency Plan (NCP) Product Schedule pursuant to Title 40 of the CFR, section 300.915. The Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) for application and use in all waters. Testing results indicates that the VB products enhance the remediation process of alkanes and aromatics.
Enhanced Water Remediation
The product formulation of VB591™ has a patented oleophilic coating that clings to oily organic contaminants while slowly releasing the nutrients necessary for enhancing microbial growth. VB591™ formulation takes advantage over natures existing waste disposal system. Oxidation-reduction reactions are the primary reactions created during bioremediation that yield free energy that microorganisms can use for cell growth and reproduction. These beneficial microorganisms can then grow in large quantities due to the formulation and will breakdown complex wastes, fats, oils, and hydrocarbons into simple, nontoxic by-products of CO2, water and traces of fatty acids.
The bionutrients, VB591™ can be sprayed onto water, soil, and vegetation tissue. As the solution comes in contact with the oil on these surfaces, it attracts the oil present, reduces surface tension, enables the oil residuals now carried by the solution for a greater surface interface for more native bacteria to access the oils and perform the breakdown and conversion of the hydrocarbons.

Using VB591™ Water for Bioremediation – CASE STUDY
Site: Underground Storage Tanks and Groundwater Remediation, MA
Bioremediation Treatment Protocol: In accordance with US EPA regulations, a Massachusetts remediation company commenced work on two wells where gasoline contaminants had polluted the groundwater. The company’s use of VB591™ made it possible to successfully remediate the wells contaminated with BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) and MTBE.
The groundwater was treated in-situ without pump-and-treat, bio-venting or air-sparging technologies. A mixture of VB591™ and water was inoculated into the wells to remediate the contaminated groundwater.
Results: Treatment of the wells resulted in reaching the EPA minimum standards of BTEX and MTBE contaminants in groundwater in less than three months for Well Site 1 and less than four months for Well Site 2.
This graph provides a summary of the bioremediation results. All data are shown in micrograms per liter (parts per billion). While MTBE data were not available for Well Site 1, MTBE was reduced from 130 ppb to 1.8 ppb in Well Site 2.
